You’ve probably heard your friend or neighbor talking about essential oils. Maybe you saw the pins on Pinterest or read about them in a magazine. They may even be popping up on your Instagram feed. So, what exactly are oils and why do you need them?

Think about the last time you were out in nature, all that fresh air made you feel uplifted and alive, right? The essence of the plants around you are made to renew and refresh us! These essences, or fragrances, from nature are essential oils. By definition, essential oils are the vital and aromatic fluids of a plant, shrub, root, herb, flower, seed, or tree — basically the plant’s internal juices. The oil contains powerful, natural compounds that contribute to the life and health of the plant — they work to protect, energize, help it reproduce, and keep it in balance. These compounds are recognized by our bodies and when the plants are grown in the proper conditions, harvested at the right time, and distilled with the utmost care, they can aid in keeping our bodies healthy, well, and happy, too.

Essential oils are amazingly versatile. They support our health and function of systems in the body and can be used for everything from cleaning to emotional support. Their molecules are so small that they can pass through our tissues, directly into our cells where they can do some amazing things. Used for centuries, essential oils are probably in many of the products you already use every day — like toothpaste, skin care products, and food. However, not all oils are created equal. Essential oils used in food and cosmetics are typically synthetic; adulterated to the point that the body processes them as a toxin. These types of synthetic oils work against us. A truly pure essential oil maintains the plant’s essences and life-giving properties allowing them to benefit the whole body.

The way we apply oils varies depending on the need. Generally, there are three application methods we use most often: aromatically, topically, and internally (only internally when stated on the label as a dietary supplement).

Essential oils work organically in our bodies to help support health. They are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream when applied and can be very effective at creating balance and helping your body do what it’s meant to! It takes just 20 minutes for an essential oil to reach every cell in your body. Pretty powerful, right? Magic? Nope. Essential oils aren’t a quick fix or a magic potion, but when used in combination with a healthy lifestyle, essential oils can can help our bodies achieve balance and make us feel amazing.

Young Living Essential Oils can be applied to the skin — some oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil (V-6, coconut oil, grasped oil, olive oil, etc.) while others can be applied directly to the skin. Always check the oil bottle label for dilution instructions prior to use.  Using oils on the bottoms of the feet is a good place to start and an efficient way to get them into your system. They can be applied to the area of the body that needs support and also to the neck, temples, behind ears, wrists, stomach, and along the spine.

When we inhale or diffuse an essential oil, it takes just 22 seconds for it to reach the limbic part of the brain — the seat of your emotions! Aromatic use is the quickest way for your body to use essential oils and probably one of the most enjoyable. Using a diffuser is our favorite way to use oils aromatically, plus your house will smell AMAZING! Oils can also be inhaled directly from the bottle, by simply placing a drop in your hand and breathing it in deeply, or experienced throughout the day by wearing them on diffuser jewelry.

Young Living has the purest oils on the market. The Vitality line of essential oils are labeled safe for ingestion and can be used to support our health. Vitality oils can be added to tea, honey, maple syrup, or to beverages. Vitality oils can also be added to an empty vegetable capsule with a carrier oil and taken as a dietary supplement. The Vitality line is clearly labeled so it’s easy to distinguish which oils you can safely ingest.

Sounds great, but don’t think you have the time? That’s the beauty of oiling, you just start. Baby steps, small changes. Slowly replacing your conventional products and infusing your home and your life with the power of essential oils. Start small, room by room, product by product, making one small change at a time. Don’t be surprised if it’s actually fun.

The essential oils business is booming. In a sea of choices, how do you choose the right oil company for you? And why should it be Young Living?

For starters, let’s talk regulations and labeling — or more like the lack thereof. Did you know that in order for a company to label an essential oil 100% pure, it only has to contain a small percentage of essential oil? The remainder of that bargain essential oil you checked out at the grocery store last week probably contains synthetic fillers that not only make it less effective, but could also cause skin irritations or a health risk. Does the ingredient list on your bottle truly tell you everything in it? But my essential oil is labeled organic, you say? That’s what we thought too, until we realized our organic bottle of Spearmint essential oil also said not for ingestion. Unfortunately, the term organic is not regulated by the FDA in regards to essential oils. In fact, the FDA does not currently certify essential oils. Don’t be fooled by savvy marketing “certifications” and qualifications. The process used to grow, harvest, and distill essential oils is critical to the end product. This is why it is so important to choose a company you can trust. The only way to know the quality and power of your essential oil is to know every part of the process.

Young Living’s oils are different because of their unmatched commitment to producing a pure, unadulterated oil. This commitment to quality means they control every part of the process — from cultivating the seeds, planting them on their farms or with trusted partners (with the same high-quality standards), weeding the crops BY HAND, harvesting and distilling on-site, to testing and the finally sealing the bottles before shipping them directly to your doorstep.

We chose Young Living because of their commitment to the earth, quality, and reputation of integrity and transparency. Their rigorous standards are upheld by the Young Living Seed to Seal commitment Every step from planting to bottling is detailed and controlled. We like knowing that with every Young Living essential oil, supplement, skin care product, and cleaner we use, we’re getting truly pure, unadulterated products. No fillers, toxic extenders, or synthetic materials are used anywhere in the process. This is what makes Young Living different. It’s the reason they’re the only essential oils we will use.

We love a bargain, but when it comes to essential oils, you literally get what you pay for. It takes approximately 75 Lemon to make just one 15 ml bottle of Lemon essential oil. Cypress essential has 280 known constituents. If you distill it for 20 hours you only get 20 constituents, if you distill it for 26 hours you get none! Most Cypress essential oil on the market is only distilled for 3.5 hours. If you want your Cypress essential oil to do what it’s intended to do, you MUST get all 280 constituents, which means your distiller better know exactly what they’re doing. This process takes time, money, and EXPERIENCE.

Young Living is often more expensive than other brands because of this — they know when to plant, when to harvest, and exactly how long to distill the plant to produce an essential oil for true therapeutic use. If at any point during the process, something doesn’t meet their standards, they don’t sell it. This means sometimes our favorite oils and products go out of stock, but we recognize and respect that our oil company isn’t in business just to make a quick buck. Quality and integrity is the core of this company and that is reflected in every top notch oil and product we use.
