You’ve probably heard your friend or neighbor talking about essential oils. Maybe you saw the pins on Pinterest or read about them in a magazine. They may even be popping up on your Instagram feed. So, what exactly are oils and why do you need them?

Think about the last time you were out in nature, all that fresh air made you feel uplifted and alive, right? The essence of the plants around you are made to renew and refresh us! These essences, or fragrances, from nature are essential oils. By definition, essential oils are the vital and aromatic fluids of a plant, shrub, root, herb, flower, seed, or tree — basically the plant’s internal juices. The oil contains powerful, natural compounds that contribute to the life and health of the plant — they work to protect, energize, help it reproduce, and keep it in balance. These compounds are recognized by our bodies and when the plants are grown in the proper conditions, harvested at the right time, and distilled with the utmost care, they can aid in keeping our bodies healthy, well, and happy, too.

Essential oils are amazingly versatile. They support our health and function of systems in the body and can be used for everything from cleaning to emotional support. Their molecules are so small that they can pass through our tissues, directly into our cells where they can do some amazing things. Used for centuries, essential oils are probably in many of the products you already use every day — like toothpaste, skin care products, and food. However, not all oils are created equal. Essential oils used in food and cosmetics are typically synthetic; adulterated to the point that the body processes them as a toxin. These types of synthetic oils work against us. A truly pure essential oil maintains the plant’s essences and life-giving properties allowing them to benefit the whole body.



The way we apply oils varies depending on the need. Generally, there are three application methods we use most often: aromatically, topically, and internally (only internally when stated on the label as a dietary supplement).

Essential oils work organically in our bodies to help support health. They are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream when applied and can be very effective at creating balance and helping your body do what it’s meant to! It takes just 20 minutes for an essential oil to reach every cell in your body. Pretty powerful, right? Magic? Nope. Essential oils aren’t a quick fix or a magic potion, but when used in combination with a healthy lifestyle, essential oils can can help our bodies achieve balance and make us feel amazing.


Young Living Essential Oils can be applied to the skin — some oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil (V-6, coconut oil, grasped oil, olive oil, etc.) while others can be applied directly to the skin. Always check the oil bottle label for dilution instructions prior to use.  Using oils on the bottoms of the feet is a good place to start and an efficient way to get them into your system. They can be applied to the area of the body that needs support and also to the neck, temples, behind ears, wrists, stomach, and along the spine.


When we inhale or diffuse an essential oil, it takes just 22 seconds for it to reach the limbic part of the brain — the seat of your emotions! Aromatic use is the quickest way for your body to use essential oils and probably one of the most enjoyable. Using a diffuser is our favorite way to use oils aromatically, plus your house will smell AMAZING! Oils can also be inhaled directly from the bottle, by simply placing a drop in your hand and breathing it in deeply, or experienced throughout the day by wearing them on diffuser jewelry.
